Overview of The Serai Bandipur

The Serai, bandipur Built seamlessly into the forests around, The Serai Bandipur reserves half its land for the wild.
For the shy deer that peer through your window, for the wild squirrels that dart by, the astounding birds who swoop around and for the elephants that call from a far.

Welcome to The Serai Bandipur

The Bandipur National Park is part of the massive Nilgiri biosphere, home to some of the most endangered species of wild life, the majestic tiger being its poster child. Watered by 4 rivers - the Moyar, Kabini, Moolehole and Nugu, Bandipur is an area so close to nature and its creatures that venture into its heart is one of the most beautiful you could ever set upon, and to actually stay overnight, under the canopy of stars, is in one word-unforgettable.

PROJECT TIGER at the Bandipur National Park

The Experience at The Serai Bandipur

The Nilgiri mountain range from The Serai - BandipurDriving right through the wildlife park is an opportunity not given to many, and once you make your way on the path rolling across the hills and dales through patches of forest – right up to The Serai’s gates, you enter a world apart. Serai Bandipur lives up to its image of luxuriant sophistication – every tiny comfort of yours taken care of. The finest of fittings along with spotless interiors, international standards of workmanship – all balance alongside local art work – like the stone rubble work on the walls – and the endearing thatched roofs. The Serai Bandipur has been built seamlessly into the forests around. Over 100 different species of trees have been planted across the property–both flowering and fruit trees.

Flame of the forest, amalaki, singapore cherry, bamboo, sandalwood, mango, guava, papaya, bougainvillea – to keep the land as natural as possible. The walkways too are unique – with leaves and ferns permanently imprinted in the concrete. Across the property, little thatched cottages arise – spread out over wide spaces – and at sundown, a bonfire crackles in the centre, calling all their guests to come and share their stories of the day. Complete quiet, a star-spangled sky, breeze through the wild grass and bamboo thickets, the smell of night flowers, the blue hills towering around, the calls of peacock and the occasional visit of a cluster of spotted deer – this is the life that awaits.

What To Expect at The Serai Bandipur

Welcome to one of the most memorable holidays you will go on – starting now. Here are some things you can expect, (and some you should not) from your travel and stay. Getting ready, we feel, is so much part of the fun. So let the excitement begin now... Life Awaits!

Outdoors at The Serai Bandipur

The Clothing

The temperature in Bandipur hovers between 28°C in summer and 10°C in winter. If you’re travelling in summer, take tees and shorts, except for the evenings when mosquitoes like to show you they love you too. In the winter, come in with woollens and mufflers and light shawls. Always wear clothes in earthy colors of khaki or brown, and not bright colors as they distract animals. Except for the monsoons, this is a dry region, and dusty. Come prepared. Carry water and tissues with you (which you need to take back, used or not). Wear sneakers and caps and sunscreen lotion and get ready for the time of your life.

The Food

The menu is pre-planned with a variety across the week, made of fresh produce sourced from nearby villages. Chefs at The Serai Bandipur are among the finest and most intuitive. Their food, on feedback from our guests, is resplendent with local spices and recipes - and we’re told – lip-smacking. The Serai Bandipur does cater for vegetarians and Jains specially, on advance notice, but any other diet restrictions should be sent to them earlier. Dependent on occupancy, the menu is a la carte or on a buffet spread.

The Wild

You have long wanted to get as close to the wild as you can. The Serai Bandipur hopes to make that dream come true. According to the latest guidelines, Serai Bandipur has a fixed number of seats allocated on the safaris into wildlife reserves, run by Jungle Lodges & Resorts, for those above 3 years of age. When those seats are full, they cannot accommodate their guests. At other times, wild cats refuse to co-operate and strut around for our viewing. You do understand that these things are beyond their control. On the other hand, most of their resorts bordering the wildlife reserves have no aggressive fencing. The Serai Bandipur leaves large portions open for the birds, the beetles, the deer... while light solar fencing encloses their built-in areas. So it is not unusual to find deer grazing in your backyard, or hear the call of an elephant just outside the resort. There may be others that hop in to visit too. They will not bother you unless you bother them. Remember – the forests are their home. We are just visitors there. We urge you to keep your voices low, play no music and wear nothing bright, reflective or distracting when you go on the safaris. Do not scream or wave or shoo away the animals. Keep this world of fauna and flora as beautiful and private as you find it – for our children to one day enjoy.

The Road

The Serai is a wilderness destination. The guests go to them for the exotic locales hidden away in niches and off the grid spots. Naturally, these are hard to reach. Roads crumble into dirt tracks once in a while, like in the last 4 kms to the Bandipur resort. Thereforesedans are not advised, 4-wheel-drives are. Bring water, sun glasses, some good music and your camera and wait till you reach our gates.

The Entertainment

When you do get back to the resort after a day in the forest, you come home to their well-stocked bar or the pampering in their spa, Omã. The Serai Bandipur has a library and limited indoor games for children, with a telescope for star-gazing in the resort. The conference room puts on wildlife films at night, and much lore is exchanged around a crackling bonfire the resort lights for their guests who’d like one. Remember to ask first about which of these are included in your tariff, and for which you’d need to pay extra. In case the weather plays spoilsport, some of these may not be possible. Thank you for understanding.

The Limitations

It says something for The Serai that most of their guests keep coming back again and again. Their staff is local, and their smiles genuine. It is common to see them kick a ball around with your children, or go out of their way to get you a coffee the way you like it. The Serai Bandipur is happy when its efforts are appreciated and feels sad when a few people complain when tigers don’t appear on demand or the weather doesn’t behave or an unforeseen situation arises. You are going to have a fantastic holiday, and The Serai Bandipur will help you to iron out the little things that stop it.

On The Road

Their guests come to them for our exotic locales hidden away in niches and off the grid spots. Naturally, these are hard to reach. Roads crumble into dirt tracks once in a while, like from Yedur Cross to Hassan. Therefore sedans are not advised, 4-wheel-drives are. Bring water, sun glasses, some good music and your camera – you’ll get some inspiring shots along the way – of the hills and mile after mile of serene coffee estate.

Lip-smacking activities

Their menu is pre-planned with a variety across the week, made of fresh produce sourced from nearby villages. The Malenadu cuisine which is local here, is available, in all its splendor on buffet, at the discretion of their chef. In case of very low occupancy, the menu is a la carte. The Serai do caters for vegetarians and Jains specially, on advance notice, but any other diet restrictions should be sent to us earlier. Rest assured, you’ll love the food!

The Entertainment

The resort has enough to keep you busy, if you’ve had enough of just chilling out. The Serai Chikmagalur has a library and limited indoor games for children. The bar is really well-stocked, and their Spa, Oma, famous, for its unique brand of pampering. Much lore is exchanged around a crackling bonfire The Serai lights for their guests who’d like one. Remember to ask first about which of these are included in your tariff, and for which you’d need to pay extra. Though we do our best to put on the Greatest Show in the World especially for you, the weather and other unseen circumstances often play spoilsport. Thank you for understanding!

The limitations

It says something for The Serai that most of their guests keep coming back again and again. The team at The Serai Chikmagalur is local, and their smiles genuine. It is common to see them kick a ball around with your children, or go out of their way to get you a coffee the way you like it. The team at Serai Chikmagalur is happy when we are appreciated for their efforts and saddened when a few people complain when the road’s rough or the weather doesn’t behave. You are going to have a fantastic holiday, and Serai Chikmagalur will help you to iron out the little things that stop it.
